Revit Structure Intermediate | Family Creation | Session 2
Exclusive to ARKANCE Advantage members - Part 2 of 2 total sessions. A virtual course led by an Autodesk Certified Instructor, for proficient Revit users looking to enhance their skills in creating custom families for structural projects.
Description
Revit Structure | Intermediate – Family Creation is an intensive 2 sessions x 3.5 hours (Total: 7 Hours) virtual course designed for proficient Revit users looking to enhance their skills in creating custom families for structural projects. Led by a Certified Autodesk Instructor, this course focuses on advanced family creation techniques, allowing you to build efficient and detailed structural families tailored to your project needs.
During the course, you will thoroughly explore the Family Editor interface and learn how to create parameters and apply formulas to automate and control the behaviour of structural families within your projects. You will learn how to set up reference planes to establish the framework for your families, apply dimensioning concepts, and manage visibility settings, ensuring that your families meet the specific project requirements while maintaining clarity in both 2D and 3D views. Throughout the course, you will practise applying these concepts by working on elements such as slab edge profiles, metal composite deck profiles, structural framing profiles, and connection plates with parametric controls, among others. You will learn how to work with nested families to maintain consistency across projects and apply materials to enhance the appearance and accuracy of your families. Additionally, you will learn how to create complex forms such as extrusions and sweeps within families, associate parameters between nested families and their host components, and use shared parameters to improve scheduling and data consistency in project documentation.
Upon completing the course, you will have a comprehensive understanding of how to create, manage, and manipulate custom families in Revit, enabling you to optimise project workflows and deliver high-quality structural designs with precision. This course provides a solid foundation for developing flexible families that adapt to varying project requirements.
Prerequisites
This course is delivered in multiple sessions, and participants are encouraged to attend them in the recommended order to support consistent learning.
To join the course, participants must be confident in their use of Revit Structure. It is recommended that individuals have a thorough understanding of all topics covered in the Essentials course, along with at least six months of regular usage of Revit on structural engineering projects. This foundational knowledge ensures full engagement with the intermediate concepts and techniques presented in the course.
Additional Information
Our Courses and Deep Dive sessions are delivered virtually by Autodesk Certified Instructors, Bluebeam Certified Instructors, and experienced Subject Matter Experts. These regularly scheduled sessions are only available to Advantage customers and are not open to the public, meaning you will attend alongside other Advantage members who have registered.
Alternatively, all our courses can be organised privately for your team, following either a standard agenda or a customised curriculum tailored to your specific requirements. Private training sessions are available both virtually and in-person.
Certification
ARKANCE, an Authorized Autodesk Training Center, delivers high-quality training for Autodesk software users. To receive an official ARKANCE Certificate of Completion — a recognition of your commitment to ongoing professional development — you must attend all parts of the course.
Courseware
Before the course, you will receive a Course Pack containing training notes and/or files that need to be downloaded prior to joining the training. Please note that our training sessions are not recorded to maintain the privacy of all participants.
As an Advantage member, you receive complimentary access to course-related eLearning materials to support your knowledge retention. Login details to the e-platform are provided upon joining ARKANCE Advantage.
Learning Outcomes
During this session, you will explore the following topics:
- Module 3 – Formulas | Type Catalogue | Shared Nested Family | Materials: Discover how to apply formulas and type catalogues to standardise family creation. You will practise creating shared nested families, ensuring consistency and reusability across multiple projects. Additionally, explore how to apply materials to your families to enhance their appearance and accuracy. You will model a metal composite deck profile, structural framing profile, and a connection plate with parametric controls.
- Module 4 – Nested Families | Forms | Associate Parameters | Shared Parameters: Learn how to create complex forms such as extrusions and sweeps within families. You will practise associating parameters between nested families and their host components, and understand how to use shared parameters to improve scheduling and data consistency in your project documentation. Throughout this module, you will create a pile foundation and a culvert using these concepts.
System Requirements
Participants joining this course virtually will need:
- Revit '22 or higher, or Revit LT '22 or higher installed on their computer (required). We strongly recommend that participants join using the most recent version of the software. Please contact us if you need to purchase a software licence.
- The latest Zoom version installed on their computer (required).
