Revit MEP Intermediate | Family Creation | Session 1

Exclusive to ARKANCE Advantage members - Part 1 of 2 total sessions. A virtual course led by an Autodesk Certified Instructor, for proficient Revit users aiming to develop their skills in creating custom families for MEP systems.

Description

Revit MEP | Intermediate – Family Creation is an intensive 2 sessions x 3.5 hours (Total: 7 Hours) virtual course led by a Certified Autodesk Instructor, designed for experienced Revit users seeking to expand their skills in creating customised families for MEP systems. This course provides a comprehensive overview of essential techniques for creating precise, adaptable MEP families, offering enhanced control over project design and documentation.

During this course, you will learn how to apply family creation principles within the Family Editor interface, beginning with a structured introduction to family theory. You will explore different types of families, including system families, in-place families, and loadable families, and understand their applications in MEP systems. You will gain insights into leveraging various family templates suited to MEP geometries. To build a strong foundation, the course starts with annotation families, where you will learn how to use templates, manage linework, and control visibility through parameters for accurate documentation. The course then introduces techniques for creating MEP components with geometric forms such as extrusions, sweeps, and revolves, alongside methods for generating cut geometries using voids and cutting tools. A key focus is placed on parametric control, teaching you how to define dimensions, set up family and shared parameters, and incorporate formulas, including conditional formulas, to dynamically control geometry and visibility. Additionally, you will learn how to work with MEP connectors and understand their interactions with various MEP families, such as ducts, pipes, and cable trays. You will also practise applying shared parameters for tagging and customised schedules, enabling you to generate adaptable documentation that aligns with project-specific requirements.

By the end of this course, you will be able to apply efficient and agile workflows to create accurate, flexible MEP families. This foundational knowledge will prepare you to tackle complex project requirements and adapt to diverse client needs with confidence.

Prerequisites

This course is delivered in multiple sessions, and participants are encouraged to attend them in the recommended order to support consistent learning.

To join the course, participants must be confident in their use of Revit MEP. It is recommended that individuals have a thorough understanding of all topics covered in the Essentials course, along with at least six months of regular usage of Revit on MEP projects. This foundational knowledge ensures full engagement with the intermediate concepts and techniques presented in the course.

Additional Information

Our Courses and Deep Dive sessions are delivered virtually by Autodesk Certified Instructors, Bluebeam Certified Instructors, and experienced Subject Matter Experts. These regularly scheduled sessions are only available to Advantage customers and are not open to the public, meaning you will attend alongside other Advantage members who have registered.

Alternatively, all our courses can be organised privately for your team, following either a standard agenda or a customised curriculum tailored to your specific requirements. Private training sessions are available both virtually and in-person.

Certification

ARKANCE, an Authorized Autodesk Training Center, delivers high-quality training for Autodesk software users. To receive an official ARKANCE Certificate of Completion — a recognition of your commitment to ongoing professional development — you must attend all parts of the course.

Courseware

Before the course, you will receive a Course Pack containing training notes and/or files that need to be downloaded prior to joining the training. Please note that our training sessions are not recorded to maintain the privacy of all participants.

As an Advantage member, you receive complimentary access to course-related eLearning materials to support your knowledge retention. Login details to the e-platform are provided upon joining ARKANCE Advantage.

Learning Outcomes

During this session, you will explore the following topics:

  • Module 1 – Family Theory | Family Editor | Family Templates | Parameters | Formulas: Gain a comprehensive introduction to the theory of family creation and the Family Editor interface. You will explore different types of families, including system families, in-place families, and loadable families, along with various family templates suited to MEP geometries. This module covers key concepts such as the role of reference planes, parameter types, the application of formulas, and the syntax for creating conditional formulas. This foundational knowledge will equip you with the essential skills to develop customised and flexible families in Revit.
  • Module 2 – Annotation Families | Labels | Parameters | Linework: Develop foundational skills in family creation, beginning with annotation families. In this module, you will explore various annotation family templates, learn how to place labels, and use built-in parameters to extract model information effectively. Additionally, you will learn how to manage linework and control element visibility through parameters, providing a solid foundation in annotation family creation within Revit.

System Requirements

Participants joining this course virtually will need:

  • Revit '22 or higher, or Revit LT '22 or higher installed on their computer (required). We strongly recommend that participants join using the most recent version of the software. Please contact us if you need to purchase a software licence.
  • The latest Zoom version installed on their computer (required).
  • A stable internet connection with a minimum download speed of 10 Mbps (required).
  • A secondary screen to follow instructions shared by the course instructor during training, along with a mouse for easy software navigation (recommended).
  • A headset to ensure clear communication with the instructor, and preferably a microphone and webcam for interactive conversations (recommended).
