Revit MEP | Essentials

A private course, delivered virtually or in person, led by an Autodesk Certified Instructor, covering the fundamental knowledge required to use Revit MEP for mechanical, electrical, and plumbing projects.

Description

Revit MEP | Essentials is a comprehensive two-day private course led by an Autodesk Certified Instructor, designed for professionals in mechanical, electrical, fire, and hydraulic disciplines seeking to build a solid foundation in utilising Revit MEP on projects. This course can be delivered either virtually or in person, and covers the fundamental tools and workflows for creating and managing MEP systems in Revit, including project setup, modelling techniques, system analysis, coordination tools, and documentation practices.

During this course, you will learn how to use the core features of Revit MEP, starting with navigating Revit’s interface, setting up workflows, and linking architectural models to initiate an MEP project. You will learn how to configure levels, grids, and coordinate systems, which are essential for establishing a structured project environment. As the course progresses, you will explore how to manage views, control element visibility, and set up MEP spaces that integrate with architectural room data to ensure accurate system alignment. This course covers core modelling techniques for creating ductwork, piping, and electrical systems, including configuring routing preferences and exploring automatic layout options to streamline complex MEP designs. Further modules introduce Revit’s system analysis, model checks, and coordination tools, equipping you with essential skills to verify design accuracy, conduct clash detection, and ensure alignment across disciplines. You will also practise your documentation skills, learning how to use annotations, tags, dimensions, and sheet setup tools, enabling you to generate detailed project documentation for effective collaboration with external teams and stakeholders.

Upon completing the course, you will have a thorough understanding of Revit MEP’s core functionalities, enabling you to confidently work on live MEP projects. This foundational knowledge will serve as a strong base for advancing to more complex tasks and further developing your expertise.

Learning Outcomes

During this course, you will explore the following topics:

  • Module 1 – User Interface | Starting an MEP Project | Architectural Model Linking: Gain confidence navigating Revit’s user interface and optimising your workflow settings. In this module, you will explore how to start an MEP project by linking existing architectural models and configuring levels and grids using the copy/monitor coordination tool. Additionally, you will learn how to set up the coordinate system and structure the project environment effectively to ensure designs are aligned and ready for further development.
  • Module 2 – Views | Element Visibility | Spaces | Space Settings: Explore how to create and manage views, control element visibility using visibility graphics and view templates, and how to define MEP spaces in your project. You will learn how to align spaces with architectural room names, understand space settings, and discover how spaces capture data from MEP systems to verify alignment between mechanical system designs and project requirements.
  • Module 3 – Ducting | Routing Preferences | HVAC Systems: Practise modelling techniques to create ductwork, place duct accessories, flex ducts, air terminals, and mechanical equipment, as well as load families and configure routing preferences. In this module, you will explore how to connect ducts automatically, create duct systems, use the generate layout tool for auto-routing, and employ the system inspector to ensure your designs are efficient and meet project specifications.
  • Module 4 – Piping | Graded Pipes | Sprinkler Systems | Automatic Layouts: Learn how to design and connect piping layouts with linear and graded pipes. Explore automatic layout options for piping systems, including sprinklers, and learn how to place plumbing components and fixtures. You will also understand how Revit helps calculate fixture/loading units and size domestic water systems piping, ensuring your designs meet project specifications and local standards.
  • Module 5 – Electrical Systems | Lighting & Power Layouts | Cable Trays | Conduits: Discover how to create electrical systems, including lighting and power layouts. Explore modelling techniques for designing cable trays and conduits. In this module, you will learn how to create and manage electrical systems by placing electrical fixtures, lighting fixtures, and electrical equipment, while ensuring your layouts meet project requirements.
  • Module 6 – System Analysis | Schedules | Model Checks | Model Coordination: Understand the fundamentals of system analysis and learn how to leverage Revit's tools to ensure your model’s accuracy. Practice generating and customising schedules/quantities to meet your project needs. Additionally, you will learn how to perform model checks using Revit’s built-in features and advanced scheduling techniques to verify your design, ensuring accuracy and clash-free results. You will also explore Revit’s coordination tools to enhance communication among team members.
  • Module 7 – Documentation | Tags | Detailing | Text | Dimensions: Learn how to produce industry-standard documentation by adding annotations, tags, and dimensions to your views. You will explore Revit’s comprehensive annotation tools to enhance the depth and accuracy of your design documentation. This module covers best practices to ensure that your designs meet project requirements and are easily understood by stakeholders across various disciplines.
  • Module 8 – Sheets | Printing | Export to CAD/IFC: Explore how to set up sheets for printing to meet project standards and present them in a professional format. You will learn how to export your models to CAD or IFC formats, making your designs accessible and ready for collaboration across different software platforms. This module also covers best practices for preparing views and sheets for efficient handover to external teams or clients, ensuring that all project documentation is clear, complete, and aligned with industry expectations.
