Inventor Professional | Intermediate - Advanced Part Modelling

A virtual course led by an Autodesk Certified Instructor, focusing on intermediate skills in Inventor Professional for part modelling in product design projects.

Description

Inventor Professional | Intermediate – Advanced Part Modelling is a comprehensive two-day virtual course led by a Certified Autodesk Instructor, designed for experienced Inventor users aiming to refine their skills in creating complex shapes and part designs. This course is ideal for professionals looking to deepen their expertise in part modelling techniques and enhance their ability to confidently manage more complex design tasks.

Throughout the course, you will explore advanced part modelling tools and workflows, focusing on creating complex shapes through sketching, lofting, and sweeping techniques. You will begin by familiarising yourself with Inventor's key tools for sketching and part creation, including multibody part design and manipulation, ensuring a comprehensive understanding of how to efficiently manage different solids within a single model. As you progress, you will delve into advanced work features such as grounded work points and user coordinate systems to enhance design accuracy and flexibility. The course also covers surface modelling techniques such as creating and manipulating basic surfaces, employing sculpting methods, and integrating thickened surfaces into drawing views for comprehensive documentation. You will learn how to analyse, trim, extend, and modify surfaces for design flexibility, and how to import and repair models for effective collaboration with external data sources and software platforms. Hands-on exercises will reinforce your ability to work with iParts and iFeatures, allowing you to create parametric, table-driven parts and automate repetitive tasks to streamline your design processes. Finally, you will learn how to analyse models for curvature, draft angles, and cross-sections, while also importing and linking AutoCAD designs with Inventor models to leverage existing data, boost productivity, and enhance collaboration with stakeholders.

Upon completing the course, you will have a solid foundation in advanced part modelling workflows, enabling you to tackle more complex design challenges. You will feel confident using Inventor's advanced tools to create intricate parts, improving your overall design capabilities and productivity in 3D modelling.

Learning Outcomes

During this course, you will explore the following topics:

  • Module 1 – Sketching Tools | Modelling Tips: Begin the course with an introduction to advanced sketching techniques and design methodologies for creating complex part designs. You will explore 2D and 3D sketching methods, work with various spline types, and manage appearance options such as colour styles. This module also includes tips for creating precise and efficient sketches to help you develop visually accurate and functional models.
  • Module 2 – Multibody Part Modelling: Learn how to create and manipulate multibody parts within a single design, focusing on generating the initial solid and progressively adding additional bodies to create complex assemblies. This module explores methods for assigning features to parts and managing the properties of individual solids, ensuring efficient and flexible part modelling workflows that can easily accommodate design modifications and evolving project requirements.
  • Module 3 – Grounded Work Points | Coordinate Systems | Lofts, Sweeps & Coils: Discover how to use advanced work features, such as grounded work points and user coordinate systems, to enhance design accuracy and flexibility. You will also learn how to create advanced lofts, sweeps, and coils, equipping you with a comprehensive set of tools to design complex geometries and refine part models for challenging design requirements.
  • Module 4 – Basic, Patch & Stitch Surfaces | Sculpting Methods: Explore surface modelling techniques, focusing on creating and manipulating basic surfaces such as patches and stitches to shape complex designs. This module also covers sculpting methods for refining shapes and adding detailed features to surfaces, enhancing the quality of your models. Additionally, you will learn how to thicken surfaces and integrate them into drawing views for comprehensive project documentation.
  • Module 5 – Surfacing Tools | Trim | Extend | Replace Faces: Learn how to thoroughly analyse surface models to ensure they meet design specifications and project requirements. This module covers various techniques for evaluating surfaces and making necessary modifications, including trimming, extending, and replacing faces to improve the overall fit and function of your designs. You will also learn how to copy and delete surfaces, providing you with greater control and flexibility when refining your models to achieve the desired results.
  • Module 6 – Import Surfaces | Model Translations: Discover how to import surfaces and repair issues with imported models, ensuring data integrity and smooth integration into your design workflow. This module covers the import and export of data in different formats, working within the construction environment, and managing imported solids and surfaces. These skills will enable you to collaborate efficiently across multiple software platforms and data sources, ensuring accuracy throughout your design process.
  • Module 7 – iParts | iFeatures: Discover how to create and manage iFeatures, comparing the advantages of iFeatures with copy features for efficient part design. You will also explore the use of table-driven iParts, which enable you to create parametric, table-based parts that are easily adaptable to various design requirements. By mastering these tools, you will ensure greater flexibility and control over your part models, allowing for more efficient reuse and modification across different projects.
  • Module 8 – Model Analysis | AutoCAD Data Import: Learn how to thoroughly analyse surfaces, curvature, draft angles, and cross sections within your designs, enabling you to better evaluate and refine your design iterations early in the design process. You will also explore how to import and link AutoCAD designs with Inventor models, allowing you to leverage existing AutoCAD data and engineering designs. This integration will improve productivity and facilitate better collaboration with other stakeholders, ensuring smoother workflows across your projects.
