Inventor Professional | Essentials – Introduction to Solid Modelling PLUS is a comprehensive three-day virtual course tailored for beginners who aim to establish a solid foundation in using Inventor for projects. Guided by a Certified Autodesk Instructor, this course covers the fundamental tools and techniques needed to create, manage, and document 3D models with confidence.
During this course, you will learn how to navigate the Inventor interface, manage files effectively, and work with essential tools such as the coordinate system, shortcuts, and navigation aids. You will be introduced to creating sketches with precision by applying constraints, dimensions, and parameters, as well as using equations and custom planes to develop adaptable designs. The course covers the process of using features like extrude, cut, revolve, fillet, and chamfer, while also teaching how to edit and refine models using modification tools and iProperties. You will also explore how to create and organise assemblies by placing components, applying constraints, and using project libraries and the Content Center. Key assembly tools, including the creation of simplified and derived parts, will be introduced to optimise assembly performance and facilitate the reuse of components. You will also learn how to generate and manage Bills of Materials to organise and document assemblies effectively. Additionally, the course will guide you through creating comprehensive project documentation using drawing sheets, including generating views, adding annotations, and customising layouts. Finally, you will work with external data and legacy files while learning to create engaging presentations using storyboards, high-quality images, and videos to effectively showcase your designs.
Upon completion of this course, you will be well-prepared to take on more complex design tasks, building on the solid foundation gained during training. You will have the confidence to navigate Inventor, create efficient models, and contribute effectively to diverse 3D design projects.
Learning Outcomes
During this course, you will explore the following topics:
- Module 1 – File Management | Application Options | Projects & Libraries: Learn how to organise files effectively within Inventor to establish a solid foundation for your projects. This module covers essential file operations, including managing file types such as IPT, IAM, IPN, and IDW. You will also explore Application Options and gain a clear understanding of Inventor Projects and Libraries. These skills ensure your files are well-structured and accessible, reducing errors and improving efficiency in complex workflows.
- Module 2 – Coordinate System | Shortcuts | Model Browser | Navigation: Familiarise yourself with the key elements of the Inventor interface to work efficiently and confidently. You will explore the Inventor coordinate system, shortcuts, and mouse functions to streamline navigation. This module introduces tools like the Model Browser, View Cube, and Navigation Bar, which are essential for managing models and visualising designs effectively.
- Module 3 – Sketch Creation | Constraints & Dimensions: Learn how to create precise sketches, a fundamental step in the design process. This module introduces work planes and tools for creating lines, circles, arcs, rectangles, fillets, and text. You will understand how to apply constraints and dimensions to define and control your sketches accurately, enabling you to develop complex models with ease and accuracy.
- Module 4 – Sketch Parameters & Equations | Planes: Elevate your sketching capabilities by incorporating parameters and equations to create dynamic and adaptive designs. This module guides you through sketch modification tools and formatting techniques, enabling you to refine your designs for maximum flexibility. You will also explore how to create and manage multiple sketches using user-defined planes, giving you greater control over your modelling workflow.
- Module 5 – Feature or Body Creation | Workflow Order | Renaming Features: Discover how to transform your sketches into detailed 3D models using tools like extrude, cut, revolve, fillet, and chamfer. This module guides you through organising and managing the Model Browser and renaming features to maintain a clear and efficient workflow. These skills will ensure your models are well-structured and easy to edit throughout the project lifecycle.
- Module 6 – Modify & Edit Features | iProperties: Practice modifying and refining your 3D models. This module covers feature modification tools, techniques for editing existing features, and applying colours and materials to enhance the appearance of your designs. You will also explore iProperties to manage model metadata efficiently. These skills are crucial for making iterative changes to your designs, ensuring consistency and saving time during revisions.
- Module 7 – Assembly | Constraints | Content Center & Project Libraries: Discover how to create and manage assemblies with confidence. This module teaches you how to place components, apply constraints to manage relationships between parts, and utilise workflows involving the Content Center and project libraries. These skills will enable you to build organised and accurate assemblies, ensuring your projects are robust and manageable.
- Module 8 – Assembly Tools | Simplified Parts | Derived Parts | BOM: Take your assembly skills to the next level by exploring advanced tools for creating simplified and derived parts, and designing new parts directly within assemblies. You will also learn how to generate Bills of Materials to ensure accurate documentation of all components, enabling clear communication and effective project management.
- Module 9 – Drawing Sheets | Views | Annotations | Style Manager: Learn how to create professional drawing sheets for individual parts, an essential step in documenting your designs. This module covers the creation of sheets, generating views, adding annotations, and using the Style Manager to standardise your documentation. These skills ensure your designs are communicated clearly and effectively, meeting professional standards and client expectations.
- Module 10 – Drawing Sheets | Tables | BOM | Printing | Title Blocks: Enhance your documentation skills by creating detailed drawing sheets for assemblies. This module includes modifying views, adding tables and revision tables, and managing Bills of Materials. You will also learn how to customise layouts, title blocks, and borders to suit specific project needs. These skills will ensure that your assembly documentation is both detailed and professionally presented.
- Module 11 – External Data | Legacy Files: Understand how to integrate external data into your projects. This module covers importing and exporting data, creating 3D parts from 2D legacy files, and working with solid bodies and base components. These techniques are vital for collaborating with external teams and adapting your designs to diverse workflows, ensuring consistency and compatibility across various platforms.
