Revit Structure | Intermediate

A private course, delivered virtually or in person, led by an Autodesk Certified Instructor, covering intermediate features of Revit for structural design projects.

Description

Revit Structure | Intermediate is a comprehensive two-day private course, which can be delivered either virtually or in person, designed for experienced Revit users looking to refine their skills in structural design workflows. Led by a Certified Autodesk Instructor, this course focuses on advanced techniques, such as parameter creation, worksharing, and family editing, to enable you to tackle large-scale, complex structural projects with confidence.

Throughout the course, you will explore a variety of advanced tools and workflows, including project browser organisation for streamlined navigation within complex models, as well as shared coordinates and project base points to ensure alignment and consistency across multiple models. You will practise collaboration techniques using worksharing and worksets, enabling real-time coordination among project team members and efficient data management. This course covers effective techniques for creating and managing reinforcement, including 2D and 3D detailing, which are essential for ensuring model accuracy and meeting industry standards. You will work with structural components such as columns, beams, and foundations, applying calculated values to family parameters to enhance design flexibility and efficiency in your structural workflows. Analytical modelling will be introduced, covering the basics of creating analytical models, applying loads, and integrating with structural engineering software such as Robot Structural Analysis. Additionally, you will explore the creation of toposolids to represent site conditions, enabling more accurate integration of foundational elements with the surrounding terrain. Further, you will develop coordination skills by using shared parameters for consistency and by applying schedules, tags, legends, and dimensions to organise and present your structural data effectively.

Upon completing the course, you will have gained the proficiency to apply advanced techniques to complex structural design tasks, improving your workflow efficiency and project delivery. You will also be equipped with a deeper understanding of Revit’s collaborative tools, enabling you to work more effectively within project teams.

Learning Outcomes

During this course, you will explore the following topics:

  • Module 1 – Shared, Global & Family Parameters | Calculated Values: Learn how to create shared, global, and family parameters to control various structural components within your project. Practise applying calculated values to your parameters, allowing you to drive your design logic more effectively and improve the overall accuracy and efficiency of your project workflows.
  • Module 2 – View Templates | QA Views | Filters | Worksharing & Worksets: Refine your use of view templates, QA views, and filters to maintain consistent quality control throughout every stage of your project. Practise using worksharing and worksets to collaborate efficiently within larger project teams, enabling smooth coordination, data management, and real-time collaboration across multiple users.
  • Module 3 – Family Creation | Family Editing: In this module, you will learn the fundamentals of creating structural families in Revit, including how to build parametric components. These skills will enable you to create flexible and reusable family types that can adapt to varying project requirements. You will explore how to define reference planes, family parameters, control geometry, and customise behaviours to meet a wide range of project specifications.
  • Module 4 – Project Browser | Views & Sheets | Project Template: Learn how to organise the project browser effectively to streamline navigation within complex projects. Practise setting up starting views and sheets to standardise your projects, helping you maintain consistency and clarity. In this module, you will also learn how to create templates for consistent workflows across different design tasks.
  • Module 5 – Shared Coordinates | Project Base Point | Copy/Monitor: Explore the use of shared coordinates and project base points to improve collaboration across project teams. These tools are crucial for ensuring consistency and alignment throughout the design process. Learn how to apply the copy/monitor tool for coordination, ensuring accurate alignment between different models in your structural projects.
  • Module 6 – 2D & 3D Reinforcement | Tags: Learn how to create 2D and 3D reinforcement in your structural models and apply reinforcement tags to organise your elements effectively. Additionally, you will learn how to divide walls into manufacturable assembly sizes and apply reinforcement, which is crucial for optimising fabrication and construction processes, ultimately leading to improved project efficiency.
  • Module 7 – Toposolid: In this module, you will discover how to create a toposolid in Revit to represent site conditions around a building. You will learn how to use elevation points to shape the toposolid and modify its contours by adjusting edges and adding elevation points. Additionally, you will explore how to control contour display, edit the toposolid structure, and cut it with other elements such as walls or foundations.
  • Module 8 – Loads | Analytical Model | Data Export & Import: Understand how to apply loads to your structural model and use the analytical model for structural analysis. These skills are essential for evaluating the performance and stability of your designs. You will also practise exporting and importing data between Revit and other platforms, ensuring accurate and efficient data exchange in complex projects.

Courseware

Before the course, you will receive a Course Pack containing training notes and/or files that need to be downloaded prior to joining the training.

System Requirements

Participants joining this course virtually will need:
