Revit Architecture | Intermediate - Family Creation for Architectural Practices

A private course, delivered virtually or in person, led by an Autodesk Certified Instructor, for proficient Revit users looking to enhance their skills in creating custom families for architectural projects.

Description

Revit Architecture | Intermediate – Family Creation for Architectural Practices is an intensive one-day private course that can be delivered either virtually or in person, designed for proficient Revit users seeking to enhance their skills in creating custom families specifically for architectural projects. Led by a Certified Autodesk Instructor, this course focuses on building robust architectural families, providing participants with a solid foundation in developing accurate and flexible families that meet project and client requirements.

Throughout this course, you will gain a comprehensive introduction to family creation principles, beginning with an in-depth overview of family theory and the Family Editor interface. You will learn how to select appropriate family templates and understand how to apply parameters and use conditional formulas to effectively manage geometry. As you progress, you will develop foundational skills in working with component and annotation families, learning how to leverage templates, place labels, and use built-in parameters to extract model information accurately. You will also practise working with different kinds of forms to create geometries. Building on this, you will explore techniques for developing wall-based families, such as doors and windows, by constructing reference planes as the framework to build geometry and applying forms such as sweeps and extrusions. Additionally, you will learn how to add nested components, apply dimensions, and use parameters to achieve precise control over family geometry. This course dives into techniques for associating parameters with architectural components to enhance control and flexibility. You will learn how to create and manage shared parameters, extract data through schedules, and apply shared parameters in nested families. Furthermore, you will gain skills in controlling visibility across different views and applying materials to enhance rendering and detail levels, ensuring that your architectural families meet a high standard of accuracy and adaptability.

Upon completing the course, you will have a solid understanding of essential workflows for creating and managing architectural families tailored to project requirements. This expertise will enable you to produce precise and flexible families that enhance project quality, efficiency, and alignment with client requirements.

Learning Outcomes

During this course, you will explore the following topics:

  • Module 1 – Family Theory | Family Editor | Parameters & Formulas: Begin the course with an in-depth exploration of family theory and the Family Editor interface, focusing on essential components of family creation workflows. You will learn how to select appropriate family templates for creating loadable families designed for various architectural requirements. Additionally, this module covers the definitions of terminologies and features involved in creating families.
  • Module 2 – Annotation Families | Labels | Parameters | Linework: Develop foundational skills in family creation, beginning with annotation families. In this module, you will explore various annotation family templates, learn how to place labels, and use built-in parameters to extract model information effectively. Additionally, you will learn how to manage linework and control element visibility through parameters, providing a solid foundation in annotation family creation within Revit.
  • Module 3 – Wall-Based Families | Forms | Nested Families | Arrays: Learn how to create essential architectural elements, such as doors and windows, by building geometries using forms. You will gain an understanding of reference properties and how to use forms, including sweeps and extrusions, to construct detailed geometries. This module also covers adding nested components, applying dimensions, and using parameters to control geometry effectively.
  • Module 4 – Associate Parameters | Shared Parameters | Visibility Settings | Materials: Discover how to associate parameters with architectural components to improve control and flexibility of your designs. In this module, you will learn how to create and manage shared parameters, extract data through schedules, and apply shared parameters within nested families. You will also explore techniques for controlling visibility across different detail levels and practise applying materials to enhance rendering and detail levels.

Courseware

Before the course, you will receive a Course Pack containing training notes and/or files that need to be downloaded prior to joining the training.

System Requirements

Participants joining this course virtually will need:

  • Revit '22 or higher, or Revit LT '22 or higher installed on their computer (required). We strongly recommend that participants join using the most recent version of the software. Please contact us if you need to purchase a software licence.
  • The latest Zoom version installed on their computer (required).
  • A stable internet connection with a minimum download speed of 10 Mbps (required).
  • A secondary screen to follow instructions shared by the course instructor during training, along with a mouse for easy software navigation (recommended).
  • A headset to ensure clear communication with the instructor, and preferably a microphone and webcam for interactive conversations (recommended).

Participants joining this course in person will need:

  • Revit '22 or higher, or Revit LT '22 or higher installed on their computer (required). We strongly recommend that participants join using the most recent version of the software. Please contact us if you need to purchase a software licence.
  • A large computer screen, along with a keyboard and mouse for easy software navigation (recommended).

Additionally, the training venue should be equipped with:

  • A projector setup or a large screen enabling the instructor to connect their laptop, facilitating attendee visibility of the instructor's screen (required).

Prerequisites

To join the course, participants must be confident in their use of Revit Architecture. It is recommended that individuals have a thorough understanding of all topics covered in the Essentials course, along with at least six months of regular usage of Revit on architectural projects. This foundational knowledge ensures full engagement with the intermediate concepts and techniques presented in the course.

Certification

ARKANCE, an Authorized Autodesk Training Center, delivers high-quality training for Autodesk software users. Upon successful completion of the course, participants will receive an official ARKANCE Certificate of Completion, demonstrating their commitment to ongoing professional development.

Additionally, participants are encouraged to register their attendance with Autodesk Education to receive a Certificate of Completion from Autodesk. To obtain this certificate, participants must follow the steps provided in the confirmation email sent after registration and submit a post-training feedback survey within 60 days of completing the course.

Additional Information

Our private training sessions are offered at a flat rate per course and accommodate up to eight participants. Delivered on request, these courses can be conducted virtually or on-site at your venue.

The training can follow a standard agenda or be customised to align with your team’s specific workflows, existing templates, and project requirements. Please note that in-person training will incur additional travel costs, and pricing may vary for customised curriculums.

Please contact us to discuss organising this training for your team.
